Mazzarri: 'Toro made it look easy'

Walter Mazzarri said Torino “made it seem far easier than it was” to beat Debrecen 3-0 in the Europa League and praised Simone Zaza.

The first leg of the preliminary round ended 3-0 in Alessandria thanks to an Andrea Belotti penalty, Cristian Ansaldi strike from an improbable angle and late Zaza header from a corner.

The second leg is in Hungary on August 1, but Mazzarri had said the most important thing was a clean sheet and they achieved it.

Debrecen danger for Torino

Torino start their Europa League campaign against Debrecen and Vilizar Yakimov warns the Granata need a strong home result.

It’s been a rather strange summer for Torino so far. Walter Mazzarri’s men enjoyed a solid campaign last term, as they were even in contention for a Champions League place until the final rounds, but eventually had to wait for Milan’s exclusion by UEFA in order to sneak into the Europa League.

Toro turn down Lavezzi

Ezequiel ‘Pocho’ Lavezzi was proposed to Torino, it’s reported, but the Granata weren’t interested in the Hebei China Fortune striker.

The Argentine just turned 34 and was hoping for a return to Europe after leaving Paris Saint-Germain in February 2016.

He would’ve appreciated a Toro transfer, as he’d reunite with former Napoli Coach Walter Mazzarri.

However, Sky Sport Italia expert Gianluca Di Marzio claims Torino were not interested in pursuing the matter any further.

Toro charge towards Europe

With Torino unexpectedly given a shot at the Europa League, Jay Cassano evaluates where the squad needs to improve.

Milan's exclusion from European football as a result of their Financial Fair Play settlement means Torino gets to take their place. In truth, missing a season of the Europa League won't have much impact on Milan's fortunes given their strong revenue base while they try to become a Champions League squad once again. But for Torino, it represents a significant upswing in fortunes. This windfall sets the Granata up to continue building on the strong work they've done in recent seasons.

Torino back in for Pereyra

Torino are in the Europa League preliminary rounds and therefore have an extra budget to ask Watford for €20m-rated Roberto Pereyra.

The Granata finished seventh in Serie A, which was not valid for a place in UEFA competition.

However, as Milan were excluded from the Europa League due to Financial Fair Play violations, it bumped sixth-placed Roma straight into the group stage, with Torino inheriting their preliminary round spot.
