The President spoke to La Repubblica and the Corriere dello Sport newspapers, but in his usual style did not hold back.

“It was my decision to turn down Vidal in 2011. We had to decide between him and Gokhan Inler, a buy that I absolutely do not regret, but at the time my knowledge of football was rather superficial.

ADL: 'Koulibaly ruined image'

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis felt Kalidou Koulibaly “ruined his image” with contract comments, but won’t be sold.

The centre-back said this week he expected to move on because nobody at the club had called him to discuss a new contract amid Chelsea interest.

Koulibaly: ‘I love Naples’

Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly points out he “never said anything against the fans or the people of Naples”.

The centre-back caused a stir yesterday when he suggested that he was ready to leave the Partenopei, as they have been slow in offering him a new contract.

That has led to a social media backlash from fans of the Vesuviani, who have castigated the player for his perceived lack of loyalty.

“I want to clarify, I never said anything against the fans or the people of Naples!” Koulibaly wrote on his Instagram page.
