Fiorentina-Atalanta, the new Calcio

After an enjoyable Coppa Italia semi-final six-goal thriller, Anthony Barbagallo believes Fiorentina and Atalanta are advocates of modern Italian football.

In this round of the Coppa Italia, we witnessed two sides of calcio: a pragmatic style in the Lazio-Milan stalemate and a fresh, attacking brand in the Fiorentina-Atalanta game.

The second semi-final fixture last night – featuring end-to-end action – would’ve had Gianni Brera looking down in despair. The renowned Italian football journalist was a huge follower and promoter of Catenaccio – a word that doesn’t exist in the vocabularies of Coaches Gian Piero Gasperini and Stefano Pioli.

Pioli: 'Fiorentina still believe'

Stefano Pioli concedes Fiorentina “hoped to have more of an advantage from the home leg, but still believe” they can beat Atalanta to reach the Coppa Italia Final.

The Viola found themselves 2-0 down, but scored twice in four minutes to get it back on 2-2 before half-time.

Once again, Atalanta went in front, but Luis Muriel tapped in a Federico Chiesa ball rolled across the face of goal for the final 3-3 result.

Pioli: 'Fiorentina and Atalanta are similar'

Stefano Pioli shrugs off suggestions Atalanta are ‘the new Fiorentina’ ahead of their Coppa Italia semi-final on Wednesday evening.

The first leg kicks off in Florence at 20.00 GMT tomorrow, with Lazio-Milan tonight.

“It hasn’t happened for years that none of the top three Serie A sides are in the Coppa Italia semi-final,” noted the Coach in his Press conference.

VAR-temio Franchi fireworks

A hugely entertaining Fiorentina 3-3 Inter gave Giancarlo Rinaldi all the elements of a classic Serie A thriller: goals, controversy and chaos.

In Florence, as in the Marx Brothers’ A Night At The Opera, there was no sanity clause. A goal after 16 seconds lit the touchpaper on an evening of technological fireworks. There were so many reviews required that it felt like the final whistle might not sound until way after midnight. And, at the end of it all, who had any clue if the result was a fair one?

Pioli: 'I wouldn't give either penalty'

Fiorentina Coach Stefano Pioli “wouldn’t have given either of the penalties” in the controversial 3-3 draw with Inter, but looks ahead to the Coppa Italia.

It was a chaotic encounter, as the Viola took the lead after just 16 seconds, Inter fought back to go 3-1 up with a debatable penalty for Edimilson Fernandes’ handball.

Pioli: 'Deserved Fiorentina victory'

Stefano Pioli felt Fiorentina “deserved the victory, even aside from the incidents” that saw SPAL penalised by VAR technology.

It was a strange 4-1 result at the Stadio Mazza, as SPAL had gone 2-1 up when VAR was used to identify a previous penalty foul on Federico Chiesa, so their goal was considered void and the Viola took the lead instead.

“It was an intense match,” confessed Pioli on DAZN.

Pioli: 'Fiorentina showed courage'

Stefano Pioli felt Fiorentina showed “courage and held out for a positive result” against Napoli even amid numerous setbacks.

The Viola had goalkeeper Alban Lafont to thank for a series of stunning saves and were essentially down to 10 men in the final minutes with German Pezzella limping badly.

“We had courage and accepted a one-on-one situation with Napoli, who are among the strongest sides in Serie A,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia following a 0-0 draw.
