Finding Milan's identity

Battling an identity crisis all year, Gennaro Gattuso and his Milan must show who they truly are, writes Matthew Santangelo.

From the very beginning of the Serie A season, the buzz surrounding the retooled Rossoneri was prevalent throughout Europe, and a massively popular club spending north of €200m on fresh talent certainly will leave such a resounding effect on world football.

Besides splashing a ton of money, the purpose of sporting director Massimiliano Mirabelli and CEO Marco Fassone’s urgent market activity was to ensure Vincenzo Montella was set up for success early with the luxury of time to forge a winning identity that could instill fear in their opponents.

Berlusconi: ‘Milan need two strikers’

Former Milan President Silvio Berlusconi says playing with one striker is “the defect” of the current side.

The media mogul sold the Rossoneri in April after 30 years at the helm, and was famous for his insistence on two up-front.

While Coaches would often defy his requests, or simply play a formation which appeared to have two strikers, the former Prime Minister is insistent two up-front is the way forward.

“I watched the match [against Lazio] last night, it wasn’t bad,” Berlusconi said on Radio Radio.

Ancelotti: ‘Never doubted Gattuso’

Former Milan Coach Carlo Ancelotti declares he “never doubted” Gennaro Gattuso could improve the team.

The 58-year-old won the Champions League twice with the Rossoneri, with Ringhio a crucial man in his midfield.

“Great, Rino, I’m happy for him,” Ancelotti told Corriere dello Sport.

“I never doubted that he could transmit his soul, his character and his determination to the players. Indeed, if I were in their place I’d be careful not to take a step back with him around.

Fassone: ‘Gattuso has been great’

Milan CEO Marco Fassone believes Gennaro Gattuso “is doing a great job” but “there may still be ups and downs”.

The former midfielder replaced Vincenzo Montella after a poor start to the season, and the Rossoneri have won their last three Serie A games, including Sunday’s triumph over Lazio.

“Rino is doing a great job,” Fassone told Sky.

“It’ll still take time because he took over in November and that’s just the way it is, but this consistency in results is important, if still not definitive.

Milan's turning point

After the 2-1 triumph against Lazio, Nick Valerio examines whether Milan can build on the win or continue to be hit and miss.

This performance provided everything Milan had been lacking thus far. The team that crumbled at the first hurdle overcame an immediate equaliser to secure victory. The side that couldn’t beat any of the top six inflicted only the fourth defeat of the season on high-flying Lazio. The Diavolo who felt cursed by bad luck benefited from a handball goal and the crossbar.
