France Football: Ronaldo considered PSG

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo was, according to France Football, considering a move to Paris Saint-Germain last winter but talks were allegedly blocked by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Portuguese talisman is expected to stay at Juventus in 2020-21, but the outlet claims he was contemplating a move to the French giants during the winter.

France Football writes that Ronaldo’s entourage ‘considered it very probable’ that the 35-year-old would leave Juventus and move to Paris.

Plus ca change for Juve

Juventus fans and Maurizio Sarri will fear very little has realistically changed since the first leg defeat to Lyon, writes Kaustubh Pandey.

After the 1-0 loss to Lyon in the first leg of the Round of 16 of the Champions League, Maurizio Sarri seemed frustrated that his Juventus team couldn’t move the ball much quicker in midfield. That indeed was true, as the Bianconeri looked drab and rusty in the heart of the park and Lyon were happy to restrict them to playing harmless sideways passes for a majority of the game. A Lucas Tousart goal was enough to hand the French side a 1-0 victory.

Garcia: 'Lyon confident against Juventus'

Lyon coach Rudi Garcia maintains holding out against PSG is the ideal preparation for Juventus and the Champions League. ‘That has to give us confidence.’

Their first competitive match since the lockdown in March was last night’s 0-0 Coupe de la Ligue draw with Paris Saint-Germain, eventually losing on penalties.

That means they haven’t qualified for Europe next season and the focus will all be on keeping that 1-0 first leg result safe in the Champions League Round of 16 with Juve.

More injury concerns for PSG

PSG completed their domestic Treble, but needed penalties to beat Lyon, and had more injury concerns to Mauro Icardi and Layvin Kurzawa ahead of the Atalanta showdown.

The game ended 0-0 at the Stade de France after 90 minutes and extra time, with Lyon seeing Rafael sent off in the final minutes.

It went to a penalty shoot-out in which all the spot-kicks were converted until Keylor Navas made a save in sudden death from Traore.

Pablo Sarabia converted the decisive kick, as Paris Saint-Germain won the Coupe de la Ligue 6-5 on penalties.

Tuchel: 'I still have hope for Mbappe'

Paris Saint-Germain coach Thomas Tuchel hopes to have Kylian Mbappe back as soon as possible but admits ‘it would take a miracle to see him against Atalanta’.

The French star injured his ankle in the Coupe de France Final against St Etienne and has been ruled out of tonight’s Coupe de la Ligue Final against Olympique Lyonnais.

PSG coach Tuchel has not given up on having the World Cup winner back for the latter stages of the Champions League but thinks August 12 against the Orobici will come too soon for the 21-year-old.

No Ronaldo against Cagliari?

Juventus talisman Cristiano Ronaldo could, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, be rested when the Old Lady travel to Cagliari.

The Bianconeri could decide to rest Ronaldo with Champions League around the corner, despite the Portuguese fighting Ciro Immobile for the Capocannoniere title in Serie A.

Immobile has scored three more than the 35-year-old and the newspaper claims he could end up staying in Turin when the rest of the team travel to Sardinia for Wednesday’s match.

Juve hope to have Dybala back for Lyon

The Argentine forward had to leave the pitch in the 2-0 win against Sampdoria with a muscle problem.

Juventus won their ninth consecutive Scudetto on Sunday but the injury to the 26-year-old has put a damper on the celebrations.

The Bianconeri are still fighting for a place in the quarter-finals of the European competition, trailing Lyon by 1-0 after the first leg at the Groupama Stadium.

De Ligt needs operation?

The Corriere di Torino claims the problem has been bothering the young defender for a while and he may require an operation.

An intervention could be necessary to resolve the problem once and for all and the 21-year-old could therefore be out until the start of next season.
