Gomez: 'Atalanta always want more'

Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez tried to identify what keeps Atalanta completing comebacks and surpassing expectations. “We always want to do more.”

You can’t keep La Dea down, as once again they fought back from a trailing situation to beat Roma 2-1 and open up a six-point buffer in fourth place.

Technically, it’s really seven points, because if two teams finish level, their position is decided by head-to-head record.

Bergamo's Band of Brothers

Football Italia Chief Correspondent Richard Hall looks at the blistering form of Atalanta and warns Inter ought to be concerned facing them at San Siro.

Any military unit, sports team, business unit or simply a group operates better, when there is a utilitarian aspect to them. When the greatest good for the greatest number is primary and the individual is not put first. This is what has happened in Bergamo, there are no Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s here. What’s more, that connectivity that has now reached the fans and turned what was already a hostile and passionate group, into the beating heart of Bergamo. They now work with the team, encourage and believe in them. Nobody wants to play Atalanta right now.

Gasp: 'Tough to play for Atalanta'

Gian Piero Gasperini acknowledges Atalanta “make it look easy” after another 5-0 win over Parma. “Dejan Kulusevski was sold because it’s tough to push these players out of the XI.”

The Orobici are playing without Champions League commitments and it shows, as this was their second consecutive 5-0 victory after the same result against Milan going into the Christmas break.

Gomez made Bergamo honorary citizen

Atalanta captain Alejandro Gomez will be made an honorary citizen of Bergamo for helping the club progress in the Champions League.

Atalanta qualified for the last 16 in their first-ever Champions League campaign with a 3-0 win against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday, making sure Christmas came early in Bergamo this year.

A lot of that was down to Gomez, who has been instrumental in the Dea’s rise since arriving from Metalist Kharkiv in 2014.
