Gomez: 'Bergamo adopted me'

Atalanta captain Alejandro Gomez has said “it’s an honour” to become an honorary citizen of Bergamo and has claimed the city “has adopted me.”

The Argentine followed coach Gian Piero Gasperini to be rewarded with the title and took to social media to reveal how he became “a better player and a better person” at the Dea.

“It’s a real honour to receive this civic merit in Bergamo,” he wrote on Instagram. “The city has welcomed me since the first year and adopted me as their son.

Celades: 'Atalanta very physical'

Valencia coach Albert Celades knows Atalanta will be difficult opponents when they meet in the Champions League in February. “They are a very physical team.”

La Dea are in the Round of 16 in their debut season, and were drawn against the Spanish side.

Celades was talking to the official UEFA website and believes his side won’t have it easy against the Bergamo outfit.

“We will have to learn more about them, but they are a very physical squad, with great offensive potential.

Gomez made Bergamo honorary citizen

Atalanta captain Alejandro Gomez will be made an honorary citizen of Bergamo for helping the club progress in the Champions League. 

Atalanta qualified for the last 16 in their first-ever Champions League campaign with a 3-0 win against Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday, making sure Christmas came early in Bergamo this year.

A lot of that was down to Gomez, who has been instrumental in the Dea’s rise since arriving from Metalist Kharkiv in 2014.

Castagne: 'That long VAR wait...'

Timothy Castagne held his breath during the long VAR check before his goal was finally given, as Atalanta beat Shakhtar Donetsk to reach the Champions League knockouts.

He opened the scoring in Ukraine on a Papu Gomez assist and it was initially ruled offside, but VAR showed the Argentine was level with the last defender.

Atalanta are already winners

Regardless of whether Atalanta make it to the knockout stage, La Dea already proved their Champions League was not a waste, writes Vilizar Yakimov.

Atalanta’s impressive third place finish last term earned them an historic Champions League qualification, but La Dea can write yet more history on Wednesday.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s men need to win against Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine and at the same time hope that already qualified Manchester City don’t lose against Dinamo Zagreb. At first glance, the scenario seems unlikely, but it could very well happen, as Atalanta already proved they can hold their own in the group.

Gomez: 'Champions League Final now'

Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez praised Atalanta for “never giving up” in a 3-2 win over Hellas Verona, as they now go into a “Champions League Final with Shakhtar Donetsk.”

The Orobici were twice a goal down at home to Verona today, but kept coming back and won it in stoppages through defender Berat Djimsiti.

Gasp: 'Derby match a one-off'

Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini has stressed that “League placing doesn’t matter”  in derbies ahead of taking on local rivals Brescia.

Tomorrow marks the first time Atalanta and Brescia face off in Serie A since 2004.

La Dea are coming off their first-ever victory in the Champions League and sit sixth in the Serie A table, whereas the visitors are rock bottom and have had to deal with issues off the field.
