Gasp: 'Away goal fundamental'

Gian Piero Gasperini has Papu Gomez back and believes it’s “fundamental” Atalanta get an away goal against Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia semi-final.

The first leg kicks off on Wednesday at 20.00 GMT at the Stadio Franchi.

“It’s going to be a very important match for the season, seeing as we reached this semi-final by eliminating Juventus, clearly we also raised expectations and hopes,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

Giovinco to Al-Hilal?

Having failed to coax Papu Gomez from Atalanta, Al-Hilal are reportedly close to a deal for Toronto FC star man Sebastian Giovinco.

According to journalist Mootaz Chehade, Al-Hilal are in advanced negotiations with Giovinco’s agent, who is currently in Saudi Arabia.

An entry visa has already been granted and an announcement could be imminent.

Giovinco celebrates his 32nd birthday tomorrow and has been in Canada with Toronto FC since February 2015.

Atalanta fear they'll lose Papu

Atalanta are reportedly seeking reinforcements in January amid concerns their captain Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez will leave.

Sky Sport Italia claim the 30-year-old is having trouble resisting yet more proposals from all over the world, including China and the UAE.

It comes after Independiente President Hugo Moyano confirmed he had been in talks with Atalanta for Papu.

Independiente confirm Papu Gomez talks

Independiente President Hugo Moyano confirms he discussed Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez with Atalanta, but there is “nothing definite.”

The 30-year-old’s performances in Bergamo recently earned him his senior international debut for Argentina.

“We have had a conversation for Gomez, but there is nothing definite in it,” Moyano told Radio 10.

“I am the one who has the last word when defining deals.”

Gomez: ‘Atalanta’s best years’

Papu Gomez believes “these are the best years in the history of Atalanta” but they “suffered a lot” after the Europa League exit.

The Orobici have qualified for Europe in each of the past two seasons, inspired by their Argentinian captain.

Tommasi: ‘Armbands must be authorised’

The head of the Italian players’ union, Damiano Tommasi, says they’ll meet with the Lega Serie A “soon” about the captain’s armbands issue.

This year the league has introduced standardised armbands, white with the Serie A logo and ‘Capitano’ in large letters.

Roma’s Daniele De Rossi and Papu Gomez of Atalanta were among the players to ignore the ruling, but this week the governing body warned there would be disciplinary sanctions for players wearing the wrong armbands.

Warning over Serie A armbands

The Lega Serie A has announced that any player wearing unofficial captain’s armbands will face punishment, starting from Week 4.

A new ruling for this season requires club captain’s to wear a white armband with the Serie A logo and ‘Capitano’ in large letters.

Players including Daniele De Rossi and Papu Gomez have ignored the ruling without punishment so far, but there will now be a crackdown.
