Hellas Verona are relegated

Hellas Verona have mathematically been relegated to Serie B along with Benevento following their 4-1 defeat to Milan.

They were practically doomed by last week’s home loss to SPAL and would only postpone their fate with a victory at San Siro.

Verona were promoted after securing second place in Serie B last season behind SPAL, while Benevento came up via the play-offs.

They managed only seven wins, four draws and 24 defeats this term, scoring 29 goals and conceding 75.

ADL: 'Conte a perfect colonel'

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis has been “looking around since October” for a Maurizio Sarri replacement, including “perfect colonel” Antonio Conte.

The patron gave a series of lengthy interviews to several different newspapers, including the Corriere della Sera.

“I already spoke to Sarri about the contract and he asked me to wait. If he decides to stay, then I am happy, otherwise I’ll take that into account and will ensure the clause is paid.

Doveri for Napoli-Torino

Daniele Doveri has been announced as the referee for Napoli’s crucial clash with Torino on Sunday.

The Partenopei have to win to keep their Scudetto hopes alive, as Juventus are four points clear with three games to go, and have a goal difference advantage of 14.

The Bianconeri won 1-0 in Naples before Napoli triumphed by the same scoreline in Turin, so if the teams finish level goal difference would be the tie-breaker with identical head-to-head records.

‘Pointless to sack Pecchia now’

Verona President Maurizio Setti says it would be ‘pointless to sack’ Fabio Pecchia now, with the club virtually doomed to relegation.

The Scaligeri were all but consigned to the drop this afternoon after a 3-1 home defeat to rivals SPAL left them seven points off safety with just nine left to play for.

“Unfortunately the field of play decides things. Today, for the umpteenth time we failed against a direct rival,” Setti said after Verona’s fourth successive defeat.

Semplici: ‘SPAL fully deserved win’

Leonardo Semplici believes SPAL ‘absolutely deserved’ their vital 3-1 victory over relegation rivals Verona.

Although the Biancazzurri fell behind early on, an own goal by Mohamed Fares and strikes by Felipe dal Belo and Jasmin Kurtic gave the Ferrara side a potentially priceless three points.

It means that with three matches remaining in the season, SPAL are a point clear of the drop zone with their destiny in their own hands.

Wk35: SPAL shake everything up

SPAL have practically doomed Verona, while 10-man Benevento held Udinese in a six-goal thriller on Igor Tudor’s debut, Sampdoria and Atalanta march on.

Not only does the SPAL comeback essentially end Hellas hopes, it also sucks Chievo Verona – who sacked Rolando Maran this morning – into the bottom three.

Crotone flattened Sassuolo 4-1 and Udinese ended their run of 11 consecutive defeats, but only managed a point at 10-man Benevento, who are already relegated.

Semplici expects ‘furious atmosphere’

Leonardo Semplici expects a ‘furious atmosphere’ when SPAL visit Verona for today’s critical relegation six-pointer.

With four matches of the season remaining, the Biancazzurri must win at the Bentegodi in order to keep their survival destiny in their own hands.

However, they face a Scaligeri side who know that failure to taste victory themselves would all but consign them to an immediate return to Serie B.
