Spal: ‘Napoli? Keep the score down…’

Spal President Walter Mattioli has low expectations for the Napoli game - “I hope my lads do their best and don’t concede too many”.

The newly-promoted side have lost their last three games by a score of 6-0, while Maurizio Sarri’s men have scored 10 goals in their previous two fixtures.

“The relationship between the two clubs is great,” Mattioli explained on Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

Serie A attendances up

Week 5 saw an average of 23,000 fans at Serie A fixtures, as attendances continue to rise.

September sees the first midweek Serie A round of the season, and in the past two years the average attendance hadn’t cracked 20,000.

However, last night there were an average of 23,000 fans, a figure helped by the 45,343 who attended Milan-Spal and the 35,652 at Juventus-Fiorentina.

In addition, 28,000 fans attended the Stadio Olimpico to see Napoli beat hosts Lazio 3-1.

Bonucci: ‘Milan have done nothing yet’

Leonardo Bonucci was pleased with “three good points” for Milan against Spal but “we’ve done nothing yet”.

The Rossoneri beat the newly-promoted side 2-0 at San Siro last night, to take their tally to four wins from the opening five Serie A games.

“Three good points, which must make us even hungrier to get results,” Bonucci wrote on his Instagram page.

“We’ve done nothing yet! From tomorrow we’ll already have our heads on Sunday, to repeat this and keep improving.”

Abate: Thought about retiring…

Milan full-back Ignazio Abate admits he thought about retiring after his eye injury and urges young players to look up to “exemplary” Gabriel Paletta.

Abate only returned to fitness over the summer, having taken a blow to his left eye against Sassuolo back in February, but the 30-year-old assured he had “started over”.

“It’s difficult to remember that moment in Reggio Emilia,” he told Milan TV after the Rossoneri’s 2-0 win against SPAL on Wednesday.

And then there were two

Napoli and Juventus continue to push each other, Inter fail to maintain their perfect start and Roma ease to victory, as Nick Valerio rounds up Week 5.

Napoli’s Scudetto credentials were put to the test when they travelled to the Stadio Olimpico. Having demolished Milan last weekend, all eyes were on the Capital and what began as a captivating encounter turned in to a procession, as the Partenopei emerged 4-1 victors.

In a game of two halves, the spectacle was marred by defensive injuries to the integral pair of goalscorer Stefan de Vrij and Bastos. There were concerns about the lack of strength in depth at Lazio, especially after selling Wesley Hoedt, and those fears proved justified.

Montella: 'Positive Milan start'

Vincenzo Montella discussed the Milan tactics, penalty takers and “a positive start to the season” after their 2-0 win over SPAL.

A pair of spot-kicks from Ricardo Rodriguez and Franck Kessie proved enough to get the three points at San Siro.

Montella had been expected to use a 3-4-2-1 with Suso and Hakan Calhanoglu behind Andre Silva, but instead benched the Spaniard.

Milan put SPAL on the spot

Penalties from Ricardo Rodriguez and Franck Kessie allowed Milan to send SPAL towards a third straight defeat.

The Rossoneri have now won every competitive match this season, save for their 4-1 defeat at Lazio.

Alfred Gomis tripped Nikola Kalinic for a spot-kick, which Rodriguez converted to give the hosts an early lead at San Siro.

Leonardo Bonucci needed a goal-line clearance to deny Federico Mattiello’s header, but when Dias Felipe brought down Kessie, the Ivorian took the penalty himself.
