Ibrahimovic back for Milan

Milan have called up Zlatan Ibrahimovic to face SPAL in Serie A this evening after the striker recovered from a calf injury.

Ibrahimovic has yet to play for Milan since the season restarted, but the 38-year-old returned to training late last week.

He has now been passed fit to travel to Ferrara and could even start, as suggested by coach Stefano Pioli yesterday.

However, defender Leo Duarte is still on the comeback trail from a thigh problem.

Pioli: 'Milan can beat anyone'

Stefano Pioli has claimed Milan ‘can beat anyone’ and urged his fringe players to be ready, as ‘the subs will be crucial’ during the ‘tour de force’ run-in of Serie A.

Pioli replaced Marco Giampaolo in October last year and has gradually turned things around at San Siro, with the club currently fighting for a place in Europe next term.

Milan have impressed since the return to action and has only conceded once in three games this month, culminating in an important 2-0 win against Roma on Sunday.

Serie A Week 29 referees

The referees for Serie A’s Week 29 fixtures have been announced, with Davide Massa given Torino-Lazio and Genoa-Juventus going to Gianpaolo Calvarese.

Massa [pictured] has officiated 24 games in all competitions this season, dishing out 124 yellow cards and awarding 11 penalties.

Calvarese, on the other hand, has booked just 76 players and blown for four spot-kicks in his 16 matches.

Elsewhere, Inter’s visit of Brescia will be overseen by Gianluca Manganiello and Maurizio Mariani is handed Milan’s trip to bottom-placed SPAL.

Serie A bans for Week 29

Lorenzo Pellegrini, Jordan Veretout, Juraj Kucka and Ruslan Malinovskyi are among the players given a one-match Serie A ban, along with Verona coach Ivan Juric.

The Disciplinary Commission gave its verdicts after the weekend’s Week 28 fixtures.

Kucka was sent off for dissent during Parma’s 2-1 defeat to Inter and had to be angrily led away from the pitch following his dismissal, which earned him a €10,000 fine on top of the ban.

Rizzoli 'would consider' VAR challenge

Refereeing designator Nicola Rizzoli says Serie A would ‘consider’ VAR challenge and claims there are ‘more controversies’ in Italy.

Rizzoli will not be against implementing a challenge rule, similar to the one used in tennis, to football but insists IFAB will have the final say.

“It would be something to consider. It’s not something we are against, but the decision must be made by IFAB,” he told Radio Anch’io Sport.

Di Biagio didn't expect points from Napoli

SPAL coach Luigi Di Biagio has claimed he ‘tried to put Napoli in difficulty’ and was happy with his players reaction: “It was a good test to continue hoping.”

Napoli won 3-1 on Sunday and the SPAL tactician confessed he didn’t expect points against Gennaro Gattuso’s men at the San Paolo.

“I tried to put Napoli in difficulty by playing two strikers,” he said at a press conference. “In the first half we didn’t succeed due to their dribbling abilities.

Highlights: Napoli 3-1 SPAL

A delightful Dries Mertens dink set the tone for Napoli’s 3-1 victory over SPAL, although Andrea Petagna did give his future club a taste of what he can do.

There could’ve been even more goals along with Jose Callejon and Amin Younes efforts, as Lorenzo Insigne was denied by the woodwork and had another goal ruled offside.

Alex Meret had work to do as well, denying a Mattia Valoti scorcher.
