Gattuso: 'I will make changes'

Gennaro Gattuso reveals he will make three or four changes in Napoli’s XI against AZ Alkmaar and admits the Covid situation is concerning.

"We know the sacrifices we made last year to qualify for Europa League. It’s an important competition for me, for the staff and for the club. We have to qualify for the next stage,” Gattuso said in a press conference at the eve of the game, also attended by the Partenopei star Dries Mertens.

Mertens: 'Work in progress at Napoli'

Dries Mertens is not sure Napoli are a stronger side compared to last season and reveals how Victor Osimhen can help the Azzurri.

“We have plenty of motivations,” the Belgian said in a press conference on the eve of Napoli's Europa League clash against Az Alkmaar.

“It is not easy when you change system, there are also difficult moments, we are still working.

“AZ are a strong team with very strong young players and a great future, if you are not smart you can also lose and concede many goals.”

Gasperini: 'Midjtylland opportunity for Atalanta'

Now 13 AZ players have COVID

The number of players testing positive for COVID-19 at AZ Alkmaar has risen to 13, but Thursday’s Europa League game with Napoli should still go ahead.

There had been eight players who contracted Coronavirus, but a statement released this afternoon confirms another five tested positive.

The statement also points out that the majority of the players are asymptomatic and their game with Napoli is scheduled to go ahead as planned.

Councillor: 'Advisable not to play Napoli-AZ'

Napoli are 'advised' not to play the scheduled match in the Europa League against AZ Alkmaar, who have eight positive cases of coronavirus in their squad.

The Partenopei come from a hectic period relating to positive cases in their own camp and eventually lost 3-0 by default to Juventus.

Napoli were stopped from travelling by the local health authorities and have appealed the decision, and Corriere della Sera reports the eight positive cases of coronavirus in the first-team squad of Dutch opponents AZ on Thursday.

Spadafora: 'Serie A needs Plan B and C'

Minister of Sport Vincenzo Spadafora said football has no ‘certainties’ to complete the season and urges Serie A to ‘find a Plan B and C’.

After a new wave of coronavirus in the top tier, the Minister of Sport said he believes the championship can be completed but stressed he can’t guarantee anything.

“We can do it, but I don’t know if we can go all the way,” Spadafora told La7. “We have no certainties for either Serie A or the other aspects.

“The League must find a Plan B and C.”

Europa League referees

UEFA has announced the referees for the first round of fixtures in the Europa League group stage, where Roma, Milan and Napoli are involved.

Polish referee Daniel Stefanski has been assigned the Group F tie between Napoli and AZ Alkmaar at the San Paolo on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the match between Young Boys and Roma, which kicks off at 17.55 UK time the same day, has been given too Spanish match official Carlos del Cerro Grande.

Milan face Celtic at Hampden Park at 20.00 UK time, with Slovenian Matej Jug on the whistle.

Higuain: 'European media was too much'

Former Napoli, Milan and Juventus forward Gonazlo Higuain said he moved away from Europe and to Inter Miami ‘with the intention of being happy again’.

Higuain ended his stay at Juventus during the summer and moved to the MLS in hope of finding a place to ‘enjoy playing’ again.
