De Zerbi doubts VAR call

Roberto De Zerbi is not convinced by the disallowed Sassuolo goal in a 2-0 Coppa Italia defeat to Napoli. “It’s difficult to judge.”

It was still 1-0 at the Stadio San Paolo when Manuel Locatelli found the back of the net, but the equaliser was revoked after a VAR review suggested handball in the build-up.

“It’s difficult to judge and referees can make mistakes too,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

Coppa: Napoli push Sassuolo aside

Arkadiusz Milik scored one and set up the other for Fabian Ruiz, as Napoli pushed past Sassuolo to book a Coppa Italia quarter-final with Milan.

The Partenopei had to do without Dries Mertens, Marek Hamsik, Raul Albiol, Piotr Zielinski and suspended Simone Verdi, while Sassuolo missed Marlon, Gian Marco Ferrari, Federico Di Francesco, Claud Adjapong and Alessandro Matri, but Kevin-Prince Boateng returned from a long lay-off.

Only four Neroverdi fans made the trip down to the Stadio San Paolo, with the overall attendance at around 15,000.

The Partenopei are without Dries Mertens, Marek Hamsik, Raul Albiol and suspended Simone Verdi, while Allan is rested following a winter break trip home to Brazil.

It means Arkadiusz Milik partners Lorenzo Insigne upfront, with a revamped midfield including Amadou Diawara and Adam Ounas.

European places are up for grabs

With the top three breaking away and the rest of the table so tight, Matthew Santangelo maintains many clubs can harbour genuine European ambitions.

Juventus (53 pts), Napoli (44 pts) and Inter (39 pts) look to be in control of three of Serie A’s four Champions League spots midway through the season. Though Lazio currently occupy fourth, there are nearly half a dozen clubs jockeying with them for a coveted UCL berth – some more formidable and better equipped than others to unseat the Biancocelesti. With all this being said, which clubs in contention should attempt to stay in the hunt through an aggressive January transfer approach, and which should stand pat?
