Tavecchio: Ceferin rise unexpected

FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio admits Aleksander Ceferin’s rise to UEFA power happened “in a way that not even we expected”.

Ceferin was the unanimous choice to succeed Michel Platini on Wednesday, and while Tavecchio made it clear the former Slovenian FA chief quickly became Italy’s man, he remained surprised by how quickly the 47-year-old won so many federations over.

“The forecast we made at the time was substantiated, in a way that not even we expected ourselves,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

Ceferin hails Italy support

“When they started supporting me, it wasn’t very clear that I’d win.

Ceferin new UEFA President

Slovenian Federation President Aleksander Ceferin has been elected as the new President of UEFA.

Michel Platini was banned from football activity, so a new chief had to be elected to see out his term, which runs until 2019.

The Frenchman was allowed to speak at today’s meeting in Athens, which saw Ceferin elected with 42 votes to Michael van Praag’s 13 votes.

A majority of 28 votes was required to win the election, and it was already clear last night that Ceferin had enough pledged supporters to win.
