‘Giaccherini staying at Sunderland’

Emmanuele Giaccherini’s agent thanks Antonio Conte for his Italy call-up, and insists his client is ‘100 per cent’ staying at Sunderland.

The winger was included in the Azzurri training camp before the Croatia game, and though he was not included in the final 23, his representative expresses gratitude for the opportunity.

“Emmanuele was very pleased to return to the Azzurri,” Furio Valcareggi told journalists at a fashion event.

Old problems surface in Italy defeat

Italy’s first loss under Antonio Conte raised more questions than answers and complicated World Cup qualifying. Luca Cetta writes.

It was a friendly, but for Antonio Conte losing to Portugal was not an outcome he wanted to entertain. He told a Press conference yesterday his players were aware how much he hated the word ‘defeat’. While unbeaten in nine games at the helm, Conte was unable to reach double figures.

The 1-0 result was sealed by an early second half strike from Eder, connecting with a superb Ricardo Quaresma cross. With it Portugal claimed a first win over Italy since December 1976 – having lost all 10 subsequent meetings.

The former Juventus Coach took over last summer, and has been the subject of resignation rumours almost ever since, but the Federation chief believes he will stay for the long-term.

“Conte deserves a top rating for the job he’s done as CT,” Tavecchio told Sky.

Conte follows Pioli’s lead

Stefano Pioli’s successful campaign deploying a 4-3-3 formation with Lazio has encouraged the Azzurri CT to follow suit, writes Alasdair Mackenzie.

As Antonio Candreva dinked in Italy’s equaliser from the penalty spot in an eerily quiet Stadion Poljud in Split on Friday night, Stefano Pioli might have allowed himself a wry smile.

The composure of Lazio’s star man was telling of a man brimming with confidence following the Aquile’s superb season. Not only did Candreva line up on the right hand side for Conte’s Azzurri alongside tireless club teammate midfielder Marco Parolo, but the two felt familiar in a system very similar to Pioli’s.
