Leading Genoa goalscorer Albert Gudmundsson will not be involved for his side’s trip to San Siro to face Milan in Serie A on Sunday afternoon, as he has come down with a bout of flu according to the latest updates.

The Iceland international has not been included in Alberto Gilardino’s travelling squad, as he had a fever earlier in the weekend that has not yet settled down, as per Gianluca Di Marzio

Gudmundsson, who has been linked with a move to Milan at various points of the 2023-24 season, is currently right at the top of Genoa’s goalscoring charts this season, with 14 goals in all competitions thus far.

For context, his striker partner, Italy international Mateo Retegui, is the second highest Genoa scorer with a tally of six for the season.

Concerningly for Genoa, Gudmundsson’s usual replacement, Vitinha, has also been ruled out as he reported some discomfort at the end of the team’s most recent training session, and so it was decided to rest him on precautionary grounds as well.

Retegui is therefore expected to start, and will likely have to go the full 90, as Caleb Ekuban and 21-year-old David Anyeke, who has only played 49 minutes of Serie A football so far, are the only other forwards in the squad.
