Sousa skips Porto-Roma for Bordeaux

Paulo Sousa will reportedly no longer be in the stands for Roma’s Champions League match with Porto, as he is ready to sign for Bordeaux.

The Portuguese tactician was expected to attend at the Estadio Do Dragao, a somewhat incongruous presence considering he has been linked with the Roma job.

However, Tuttomercatoweb suggest this evening that Sousa has pulled out of attending the Champions League Round of 16 tie.

Roma 12 years without a clean sheet

If Roma are to reach the Champions League quarter-finals, they’re going to have to break several unwanted trends, including 12 years since their last away clean sheet.

The second leg in the Round of 16 with Porto kicks off at the Estadio Do Dragao at 20.00 GMT.

Eusebio Di Francesco’s men have a 2-1 first leg lead to protect, but their history in the competition does not bode well.

That’s because the Giallorossi have lost each of their last seven away games in Champions League knockout rounds.

Roma desperately seeking Dzeko

If Roma are to get past Porto in the Champions League, they need Edin Dzeko to rediscover his European form, writes Emmet Gates.

It’s been an odd season for Edin Dzeko. The Roma striker has seemingly taken an aversion to scoring in Serie A, as seven league goals with two thirds of the season completed is a poor return for a player who netted 24 in all competitions last season. At this stage last year, he was near the top of the Capocannoniere charts with 13 goals.

Roma summit after Derby disaster

There was a meeting long into the night between Roma directors after the 3-0 defeat to Lazio, with a training retreat planned ahead of FC Porto.

The humiliating Derby della Capitale loss to their city rivals not only wiped out the opportunity to catch Inter in fourth place, but also allowed Lazio back into the race for a top four finish.

Meanwhile, the Giallorossi have to shake this off and prepare for the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16 in Portugal on Wednesday.
