Supercoppa: Not so Italian

The Supercoppa is in Jeddah this evening, as for the 10th time in 31 editions, this very Italian game is played outside the Peninsula.

Juventus and Milan face off at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium at 17.30 GMT.

The choice of venue has caused controversy, but this traditional meeting between the Scudetto winners and Coppa Italia holders has often strayed across the border and even the continent.

Since its inception in 1989, the Supercoppa has been played abroad 10 times, including today’s Saudi Arabia debut.

Supercoppa: The race to eight

The most successful sides in the Supercoppa face off today, as either Juventus or Milan will be the first to win their eighth edition.

It kicks off in Jeddah at 17.30 GMT.

This is the 31st Italian Super Cup showdown and these two clubs have won seven times each, more than any other team.

That means whoever lifts the trophy in Saudi Arabia this evening will be the first to eight and take the crown of most successful club in the tournament’s history.

Supercoppa: Potential for penalties

Max Allegri said he hopes Juventus and Milan don’t go to extra time, but their Supercoppa history points towards potential penalties.

The Italian Super Cup kicks off in Jeddah at 17.30 GMT.

Bianconeri boss Allegri noted in his Press conference that his main wish was not to go to extra time, as Serie A resumes this weekend.

The statistics are not in his favour, because since the Supercoppa was inaugurated in 1989, it has gone to extra time on eight out of 30 occasions.

Probable line-ups: Juventus v Milan

Juventus are expected to field Douglas Costa with Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala, while Gonzalo Higuain and Lucas Paquetá start for Milan in the Supercoppa.

It kicks off in Jeddah on Wednesday at 17.30 GMT.

This is usually between the winners of the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia holders, but as in this case Juve won both in 2017-18, they are up against losing Coppa Finalists Milan.

Juve have lost the last two editions of the Supercoppa, including the 2016 edition to Milan in Doha on penalties, so Max Allegri is taking few chances.

Gattuso: 'Courageous Milan with Juve'

Gennaro Gattuso believes Cristiano Ronaldo has improved considerably in recent years, but wants Milan to show “courage” against Juventus in the Supercoppa.

It kicks off in Jeddah on Wednesday at 17.30 GMT.

Much of the Press conference was dominated by questions about Gonzalo Higuain and you can read those answers here.

Suso is suspended, so we could see Lucas Paqetá start again after his debut in the 2-0 Coppa Italia victory over Sampdoria.

Gattuso: 'Higuain never asked to leave'

Milan Coach Gennaro Gattuso claims Gonzalo Higuain “never told me he wants to leave. He has to decide how to resolve the issue” with Chelsea.

The Italian Super Cup against Juventus kicks off in Jeddah on Wednesday at 17.30 GMT.

The first question was inevitably about Higuain, who it’s reported could be dropped ahead of his transfer to Chelsea.

“I base my decisions on how players train during the week and how they work with the staff and their teammates,” said a visibly tense Gattuso in his Press conference.

Allegri: 'Spinazzola and Kean stay'

Max Allegri confirmed Juventus will not let Leonardo Spinazzola or Moise Kean go out on loan in January, as injuries are starting to pile up.

The Bianconeri beat Bologna 2-0 in the Coppa Italia Round of 16 last night with Kean and Federico Bernardeschi on target.

It was Spinazzola’s debut for the club after six months of injury woes and the former Atalanta full-back impressed, but Bologna will have to give up their attempts to sign him on loan.
