Matias Soule is a mover in the Serie A top goalscorer charts, while the relegation battle ramped up a notch after the conclusion of Frosinone’s 3-0 victory over Salernitana on Friday night.

Salernitana have now been officially relegated from Serie A to Serie B with Friday’s result. That means there are two more spots in the drop zone, and Frosinone have temporarily lifted themselves out of it with their win.

Eusebio Di Francesco’s side now occupy 17th position in the league table, with 31 points from their 34 matches. They are now three points above Udinese in 18th, but have played one game more and have a lesser goal difference. Sassuolo are in 19th with 26 points, so they will not be able to move out of the relegation zone this weekend.

Udinese will still need to beat fourth place Bologna on Sunday if they are to leapfrog Frosinone out of the relegation zone.

Technically, all the teams below Monza in 11th place could still be dragged into the drop zone. However, Monza are likely to have their safety confirmed by the end of the weekend, and Genoa, in 12th on 39 points look like they will be safe as well.

Below that, Lecce, Cagliari, Hellas Verona, Empoli and Frosinone are all within seven points of the relegation zone with five games remaining – four for Frosinone.

Serie A top scorers

In terms of the Serie A top scorers, Soule has moved up to joint ninth in the standings after tucking away a 10th minute penalty against Salernitana on Friday night.

That was his 11th Serie A goal of the season, and his fifth league penalty, which brings him level with Roma’s Romelu Lukaku, Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee, Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners and Inter’s Hakan Calhanoglu.

Marcus Thuram, Paulo Dybala and Duvan Zapata of Inter, Roma and Torino respectively are the next closest with 12 each.

Albert Gudmundsson, Victor Osimhen and Olivier Giroud have 13 apiece, Dusan Vlahovic stands alone in second with 16, while Scudetto-winning captain Lautaro Martinez looks set to become the 2023-24 Capocannoniere with 23 league goals thus far.
