Sarri: Prem over Serie A!

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri admits he prefers the Premier League to Serie A as ‘at 2-0 after 20 minutes, the match is finished’ in Italy.

Sarri has led Chelsea to consecutive victories after opening with a defeat in the Community Shield, and the Coach was asked about the differences between the two Leagues.

“In Italy it was a war before the match. I think in Serie A at 2-0 after 20 minutes the match is finished. Here it's a party before the match!” he said at a Press conference ahead of Sunday’s trip to Newcastle United.

Sarri vows to quit smoking, but…

Maurizio Sarri vowed to quit smoking after Chelsea’s 3-2 win against Arsenal – but only for ‘one or two years’.

Sarri guided Chelsea to a second straight win on Saturday, but not without the Blues throwing away a two-goal lead and scoring a late winner.

“I will smoke in the evening, not during the match,” the former Napoli boss told The Telegraph, which saw him clench a cigarette packet and chew on cigarette butts.

Serie A going global again

With the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo and the return of Carlo Ancelotti, the Italian top flight is once again increasing its global reach, writes Gaby McKay.

The other 19 Serie A clubs must be wondering why Juventus couldn’t have announce the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo a few months earlier.

The Bianconeri completed a deal for the Portuguese superstar in early July, with CR7 joining in a €100m deal which caught attention across the globe. There was much talk of the growing appeal of the Italian top flight both on and off the pitch, and how the move could benefit calcio in general.

Premier League shops in Serie A

Where once wealthy English clubs looked to Ligue 1 to spend their money, Gaby McKay feels Serie A is the new market of choice.

Each January, the financial firm Deloitte releases its Football Money League report, detailing the financial state of the modern game. The report outlines the richest clubs in the world by revenue, and charts the changes over time.

In the 2018 report fully half of the top 20 richest clubs in the world came from the English Premier League. While one might expect Manchester United to top the charts, a television deal worth close to €6bn means the likes of Leicester City, West Ham United and Southampton all made the top 20.
