Official: PSG crowned Ligue 1 champions

After the Ligue 1 season was officially shut down by the French Government, PSG have been assigned the title, but the league will be denied €243m in TV rights money.

The announcement came on Tuesday that Ligue 1 would not be allowed to resume, with no games permitted on French soil even behind closed doors until September.

A decision has been made to assign the 2019-20 Ligue 1 title to Paris Saint-Germain, as they were 12 points clear at the top.

It is the third consecutive Ligue 1 title for Marco Verratti’s team and confirmed by the LFP.

La Liga could play from June 5

The Spanish Government announced an easing of coronavirus pandemic response measures, so La Liga players can resume training from May 4, with potentially games after June 5.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez held a press conference this evening, in which he outlined the ‘Plan for the Transition Toward a New Normality.’

He noted the easing of lockdown measures would be “gradual, asymmetrical according to regions and co-ordinated,” so the areas with lower number of deaths and positive cases will be able to get back to normal sooner.

UEFA medic: 'Matter of life and death'

UEFA medical chief Michel D’Hooghe is sceptical about major football tournaments resuming this season. “It is not a matter of money, it is a matter of life and death.”

This would seem to be in contrast with the official UEFA position, which is to encourage domestic tournaments to reach a natural conclusion, even if it means changing the format to play-offs.

The French Government announced this afternoon that Ligue 1 and 2 will not play again until September, joining Belgium, the Netherlands and Argentina in declaring the 2019-20 season over.

Ligue 1 set to cut season short

It’s reported the French Government will announce that the 2019-20 Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 season is already over, as no games will be allowed until August.

According to RMC Sport, the statement will be made later this afternoon or this evening.

The decision will become inevitable if the Government confirm no matches can be played – even behind closed doors – until August because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The French season usually begins in August, so they would simply terminate the 2019-20 campaign here and begin 2020-21.
