FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio said it would be “apocalyptic” if the Azzurri failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

“You face an apocalypse in case it happens, but for the most part you have to stay calm and have faith in what we’ve done over a year,” Buffon told Rai Sport.

“It wasn’t extraordinary, but it was interesting and different.

“There will also be the hurt pride of a team that was beaten in Madrid, but has a bright future ahead of it.

“We lost deservedly and criticism for me is fair, as ultimately I’m the oldest here. As always, there are some excessive comments, but that’s always the case and we have to give our response on the field.”
