De Canio's fond Udinese memories

“Udinese allowed me to make my Serie A debut,” said Genoa Coach Gigi De Canio, but he’ll have no mercy on them tomorrow.

The Friulani are in dire straits after managing only one win all season between domestic and European competition.

They have dropped Antonio Di Natale for tomorrow’s 11.30am UK time kick-off following a blazing row with Coach Francesco Guidolin, so Genoa have the chance to cause a real upset.

“Udinese allowed me to make my Serie A debut. I had great moments at the Friuli, taking part in the UEFA Cup with good results,” said De Canio.

“At the time Serie A was still dominated by the ‘Seven Sisters,’ yet my Udinese scored more than any other team. We got to the top of the table at one stage.

“It was an important and gratifying experience, during which I feel that I received a lot from the club, but gave them a lot in return too.

“Having said that, Genoa are going there for the win tomorrow. Having so many games in quick succession does make life difficult for Coaches, but at the same time is a good opportunity to make the most of every squad member.”

Bosko Jankovic has joined the Grifone injury list along with long-term absentees Marco Rossi and Juan Manuel Vargas.

Genoa squad for Udinese: 89 Anselmo, 13 Antonelli, 91 Bertolacci, 22 Borriello, 3 Bovo, 21 Canini, 4 Ferronetti, 1 Frey, 5 Granqvist, 17 Immobile, 19 Jorquera, 33 Kucka, 9 Melazzi, 10 Merkel, 24 Moretti, 18 Piscitella, 31 Sampirisi, 14 Seymour, 63 Stillo, 28 Tozser, 30 Tzorvas
