Frosinone squeezed past Cittadella after another 1-1 draw and will face Palermo in the Serie B promotion play-off Final.
The first leg ended 1-1, so as Frosinone finished higher up the table during the regular season, they would go through to the Final either with a draw or a victory.
Palermo already reached the Final, beating Venezia 2-1 on aggregate, and those games will be on June 13 and 16.
Cittadella had a bright start, Luca Strizzolo sliding in a fraction of a second too late to meet Paolo Bartolomei’s cross, but Camillo Ciano’s free kick was palmed away.
Frosinone took the lead straight after the restart, as a wayward effort turned into an assist for Mirko Gori, whose finish from 12 yards took a deflection to surprise Enrico Alfonso.
Mauro Vigorito needed a tricky double save on Strizzolo and the follow-up, but 15 minutes from time Cittadella got their equaliser. A lucky ricochet allowed Christian Kouamè to spring the offside trap and he kept his cool to finish into the far bottom corner.
Cittadella still needed to win in order to qualify for the Final, but it brought back tension to a Frosinone side that should’ve avoided the play-offs completely. They were pegged back 2-2 at home in stoppages by Foggia in the last round of the regular season, overtaken by Parma.
The visitors poured forward to the end as the packed crowd in the Stadio Stirpe held their breath and Marco Varnier received a second yellow card to further amp up the tension until the final whistle.
Frosinone 1-1 Cittadella (2-2 agg)
Gori 47 (F), Kouamè 74 (C)
Sent off: Varnier 93 (C)
