Lautaro Martinez is enjoying his rapport with Inter teammate Mauro Icardi and confirms he turned down Atletico Madrid.

The Argentine talent turns 21 later this month and scored an acrobatic volley in last night’s 1-0 International Champions Cup win at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

“I am very happy, as we’ve gone through some tough friendlies and are preparing well against teams we could face in the Champions League,” the striker told RMC Sport.

“We want to reach the start of the season in the best possible shape.”

Lautaro had originally been seen as an alternative or even heir to Icardi, but instead the two strikers have formed an impressive partnership in the 4-2-3-1 formation.

“We get on really well both on and off the field, so that is important. I am very happy with my relationship with Icardi.”

Inter swooped from Racing Club for what seems like an absolute bargain €16m, plus 10 per cent of his future sale fee.

“Many clubs came forward when I was at Racing, and Atletico Madrid were one of them, but I am very happy to be here at Inter.

“I certainly hope to be called up for international duty, that is an objective I have always set for myself. I can adapt and hope to do well both on and off the field.”
