Torino President Urbano Cairo no longer believes Coaches should be able to request VAR as ‘captains should instead’.

Torino President Urbano Cairo no longer believes Coaches should be able to request VAR as ‘captains should instead’.

Cairo was previously on record as stating Coaches should be entitled to ‘at least one review per game’, but his stance changed after Toro’s 1-1 draw with Fiorentina on Saturday, which saw Coach Walter Mazzarri sent off for protests.

“VAR should be used more and I don’t want Coaches to be able to request it anymore,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“Captains should instead as they’re on the field, close to the action and have a clear view of what has happened. It can improve things.

“We have very good referees in Italy and I think it’s right to respect them, but now it’s important that we try to tone down [their influence].

“I hope things get better, in the sense of having fair judgments. That’s all I ask for. I don’t want any kind of advantage: just fairness.

“We’ve put together a good team and invested a lot. At the end of the season, we’ll be less profitable than other years because the investments we’ve made will result in losses. Still, I wanted to do my best.

“I took on Toro, driven by passion for them and football. It seems to me that in recent years, we’ve changed the recent history of the club, who are no longer in economic difficulties and, in a sporting sense, are no longer a yo-yo club.”
