Corriere dello Sport has taken aim at Roma President James Pallotta for calling its Qatar report ‘fake news’.

Pallotta delivered the rebuttal on Twitter in response to Il Corriere’s front page for Tuesday, which read the Qatari state had offered €400m to buy the club, prompting editor Ivan Zazzaroni to turn on the American.

“There’s something worse than a President of an Italian club who lives in America and doesn’t understand Italian: it’s having a confidant in Italy who sends him news in English but can’t read Italian,” began his article, entitled ‘Fake to fake’.

“It seems complicated, yet it’s simple: a claim is reported by the authoritative Milano Finanza, according to which Qatar … would be interested in Roma, and the American President denies it: ‘It’s just fake news.’

“We published it with good evidence, but it doesn’t wash with Pallotta. And having seen the newspaper sent to him by Roma, he indignantly tweets about our front page: ‘Siri, show me fake news.’

“The great Americans now communicate everything via Twitter and, in fact, Pallotta’s message arrived in Italy, along with that of [Donald] Trump, who threatens his strict duties on prosecco and pecorino romano.

“It’s not known which tweet was most effective, but it’s a good time to ask Pallotta, while we await adequate reinforcements for a Roma side drained of their players and objectives over time…

“Siri, show me how to make Roma a title contender.”
