Spain captain Jesus Vallejo accused Italy of being ‘very dirty’ in their European Under-21 Championship opener on Sunday, and Mancini was not impressed with La Rojita’s complaints.

“There’s no risk of underestimating Poland,” the Atalanta stopper said at a Press conference for tomorrow’s match against Poland.

“We know the value of this match and this tournament: after Spain we said that the most important match was tomorrow’s to give continuity to our first game.

“The Spanish players were always on the deck, but we only played with the right intensity. It’s better that they complained and we won.

“The Azzurri shirt is just a matter of pride and something that brings us all together, so no pressure.

“We’re in the most beautiful profession in the world, wearing the most beautiful colour in the world.

“I’m personally very happy. I never thought I’d be here with the U21s. You live it for the moment and it’s the result of the sacrifices that many of us make.”

Despite being a central defender by trade, the 23-year-old has played at right-back for the seniors.

“The right-back role in the Italy team is a bit pretentious because Mr Mancini asks me to play as a third centre-back when I’m defending.

“I won’t deny that I’ve found it tough, but I’ve also felt good. It’s undoubtedly a role that I can also play in for the Under-21s, if Mr Di Biagio asks me to.”
