Gazzetta dello Sport, meanwhile, believes it was down to the 26-year-old demanding he have a say in the club’s choice of Coach and playing staff – which the Chinese side refused.

Finally, Sky Sport Italia reports the Italy winger was ‘never really convinced’ by the transfer and ‘didn’t feel like’ playing out the prime years of his career at Shenhua.

Despite needing to raise €45m by June 30, the Lupi are not obliged to sell the forward as that money will come from shifting Kostas Manolas and Edin Dzeko.

Nonetheless, El Shaarawy’s contract has only a year left to run and he would be requesting a net salary of €4m to renew.
