Lecce v Cagliari has officially been rained off at the Stadio Via del Mare after three pitch inspections and rescheduled to Monday at 14.00 GMT.

Referee Maurizio Mariani tried on three separate occasions to test the ball around the turf, but the rain continued to fall heavily and was expected to carry on for many more hours.

Following a delay of 25 minutes and three pitch inspections, Mariani spoke to the two captains, neither of them eager to play in these conditions.

“There are many zones where the ball doesn’t bounce. Lads, for me, we can’t play.”

The storms had earlier caused a blackout at the Stadio Via del Mare, while several trees came down in the car park, leading police to close some entrances to the arena.

The biggest concern was that the weather reports for the Salento area have this intensity of rain continuing for many more hours and well into tomorrow.

Nonetheless, the game has officially been rescheduled for Monday at 14.00 GMT.
