The situation going into the Christmas break is one of total and utter confusion, as President Enrico Preziosi burned a few too many bridges.

They started the season under Andreazzoli, but he was fired on October 22 after two wins, two draws and five defeats in all competition.

Thiago Motta took over and has practically been dismissed after a 4-0 defeat to Inter, although the decision appears to have been made even before that game.

The former PSG youth team boss managed two wins, three draws and five defeats between Serie A and the Coppa Italia.

Diego Lopez is flying in from Uruguay after his spell in charge of Penarol and is expected in Italy on December 27.

However, President Preziosi seems to be unconvinced by the idea of hiring the former Cagliari, Bologna and Palermo coach.

Multiple sources state he had contacted Ballardini for a return, but this would’ve been his fourth different stint at Marassi, all of them fraught with tension.

The toxic relationship with Preziosi broke down completely the last time he was sacked in October 2018, with the President publicly calling him “a terrible coach who just doesn’t know how to put his players on the pitch. He can’t do anything.”

Ballardini is wanted by players and fans, but understandably won’t return without an apology from the President, although that doesn’t seem to be forthcoming.

With all this in mind, there are now reports Andreazzoli could be recalled, seeing as the performances at the start of the season were probably better than the current ones under Thiago Motta.

Andreazzoli is also still on the payroll, so would be a low-cost alternative, and not inflict a third coach in half a season on these players.

Another candidate would be Davide Nicola, formerly of Crotone and Udinese.

The fans have also turned on Preziosi, as they suspended their strike in the stands for the recent Derby della Lanterna with Sampdoria, unveiling a banner that read: 'If you weren't here, it could always be like this.'

Genoa, Italy’s oldest football club, sit bottom of the Serie A table on 11 points from 17 rounds.
