La Gazzetta dello Sport reports there was a physical incident between Atalanta captain Papu Gomez and coach Gian Piero Gasperini at half-time against Midtjylland.

The newspaper reports there has been a tactical knot for Gasperini to solve since the start of the championship and claims the tension started before the match against the Danes.

In early October, when Gomez travelled to join Argentina after three years, Gasperini was worried about his captain’s physical management.

As the team played matches every three days for three months and this time Gomez didn’t stay at Zingonia as he usually would, recovering energy during the international break.

Gomez travelled twice during 40 days with the national team and Gasperini reportedly felt he was affected by the long flights and change in training routines.

The newspaper claims Gomez reacted to the coach’s tactical changes, pushing the Argentine closer to goal with less freedom to move around the pitch but also meaning he would save more energy.

It culminated with Gomez rejecting the coach’s orders in the first half against Midtjylland, before the two reportedly clashed in the dressing room.

La Gazzetta dello Sport claims it was ‘not just verbal’ and that the physical contact makes the damage irremediable.

Gomez has been linked with a move away from La Dea in January and said in a message to the fans on Instagram that ‘they will know the truth when he leaves’.

Gasperini tried to avoid the topic in today’s press conference, saying the press ‘can talk as much as they want’, whilst he focuses on the next match against Juventus.
