The Giallorossi had only just finished buying him from Stuttgart for €9m and many believed he would be sold for a higher price to another club.

His absence, however, has important effects on Roma's market. As well as opening the doors to alternative transactions that would allow the club to bring in some cash, most prominently the possible sale of Miralem Pjanic to Juventus, it also forces the Lupi to look for a new central defender.

According to Calciomercato.it, Roma now have a renewed interest in Lyon's Samuel Umtiti and Inter's Jeison Murillo.

Martin Caceres still hasn't renewed with Juventus and could come in as a free agent, though the player ruptured his Achilles tendon in February and his levels of fitness remain uncertain.

Finally, there's always the option of a return of Mehdi Benatia from Bayern Munich, who is also being tracked by Juventus.
